Reflections on glass, December, 2012
Training in building construction and performance as a custom home builder has
provided George Hart with a unique perspective on the use, function and
installation of recycled building materials from many places on our Earth. Much
of the Indian material used in their mountain home [see: ] was taken from old British-India homes built in the
mid-1800's. Truely indigenous antiques and even archaeological materials are
available in many parts of the world- even today. Selection and installation
must be done with care, and antiquity export rules followed, but as functional
works of art these materials are well worth the effort involved in acquisition.
The materials displayed here are not for sale, as they have been used in our own
home. However, we are able to get similar quality building materials from
friends and dealers we have known for many years. Acquisition is done by
personal inspection and purchase of the material in India or Africa and being
made aware of when old buildings are being demolished. A knowledge of the
antiquity laws of the country is a necessary pre-requisite. Such materials are
becoming rare as more local people in India improve there own standard of living
and start to utilize their indigenous ethnic relics in construction of their own
homes.
